Choosing Environmentally Friendly Office Furniture for Earth Day

Environmentally Friendly Office Furniture

Celebrate Mother Nature every day with environmentally friendly office furniture.

This coming Friday, April 22nd, is the 46th annual Earth Day. For the past 46 years, Americans have taken pause to think about ways we’re harming Mother Nature and how we can slow down or even reverse the impact that human advancement has had on our planet. With that in mind, we wanted to take a moment to identify some ways that you can bring eco-friendliness into the world of office furniture. Trust us, there are more ways than you might think.

Choosing Environmentally Friendly Office Furniture

Environmental friendliness is the name of the game in 2016, and office furniture doesn’t want to be left out of that conversation. There are plenty of things you can keep in mind to help in choosing environmentally friendly office furniture.

  • Wood is Good: It may seem counterintuitive, but with such a heavy focus being placed on environmental consciousness, many furniture manufacturers have landed on ways to source wood in much more sustainable ways. Rather than cutting down precious rainforest wood, many furniture makers are sourcing instead from lumber companies that are known to indulge in sustainable forestry practices. Look for pieces that have been certified by organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), guaranteeing that the wood has been with conservation in mind. Wood furniture also requires the least amount of manufacturing power, meaning fewer emissions from big manufacturing and metallurgy plants.

    • Recycling: It isn’t just for paper and plastic. Choosing environmentally friendly office furniture sometimes means choosing to buy refurbished or to donate old furniture to be refurbished, eliminating the need for more manufacturing and more emissions (like mentioned above).

  • Indoor Pollution: It’s a real thing, and it doesn’t come from running gas engines indoors. Some finishes, glues, and stains used in manufacturing emit what’s known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can reduce indoor air quality and contribute to outdoor smog. Powder-based finishing coats are VOC-free, require less energy, and create less waste.

These are only a few of many ways to go about choosing environmentally friendly office furniture. If environmental consciousness is high on your list of priorities, we’ll be happy to talk about ways to think green when furnishing your office.
